Over the past several months, our Visioning Study Process (VSP) and Study Committee have been working diligently and prayerfully to discern where God is leading Saginaw United Methodist Church in the coming years. This work is vital as we seek to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world and ensure our ministries meet the needs of our church and community.
What We’ve Been Doing- Prayerful Discernment: We planned and will launch this Sunday a churchwide Breakthrough Prayer initiative, inviting everyone to pray daily at noon for God to “open doors to new hopes, dreams, and possibilities for our church and in our own lives.” We will also provide a weekly prayer focus along with a prayer written by a member of the Vision Prayer Team. The Vision Prayer team is composed of Diane Woods, Barbara Debish, Laurie Tarver, Jenny Cardenas, and Ramon F. Smith
- Community Engagement: Held sacred conversations community leaders, neighbors, and school officials to understand the needs and opportunities in our mission field.
- Data Gathering: Studying community demographics, growth projections, and church trends to inform strategic planning. Data Analysis and Growth Projections work is about 80% complete. Community Needs and Ministry Alignment Sub-committee does the work of Community Engagement and Data Gathering, the members are Jenny Cardenas, Laurie Tarver, Condi Graham, and Ramon Smith
- Facility Review: We are evaluating our current facility to understand its maintenance needs, accessibility, and potential for future ministry growth. This review also includes exploring what it would look like to purchase land and relocate if that proves to be the best option for our mission. Any recommendation regarding these possibilities will come from the entire Study Committee after prayerful discernment and research, not a subcommittee. The Facilities and Accessibility subcommittee is responsible for facility review, the members are Ken Sipll, Eric James, Dale Pontius, Thomas Buchanan, and Ramon F. Smith
- Visioning Steps Ahead: Aligning everything with our mission and values, focusing on ministries for children, youth, and young families, strengthening discipleship, and expanding community outreach. Kay Kotan, our consultant, is asked our congregation to complete a Gifts and Skills Audit. The vision is a at the intersection of our gifts and the needs of the church and community. - Prayer Walks & Meetings: Starting in September, we’ll host prayer walks in neighborhoods, around schools, and at City Hall.
- Weekly Prayer Focus: Each week through November 3, we’ll post a prayer prompt on the website, e-newsletter, and social media.
- Vision Day (Date TBD)
- Strategic Recommendations: Later this fall, the Study Committee will bring recommendations to our Church Conference, based on everything we’ve learned together.
- Pray Daily at Noon using the Breakthrough Prayer.
- Join a Prayer Walk (details coming soon).
- Engage in Weekly Prayer Focus—look for prompts in the bulletin, website, and social media.
- Attend Vision Day
- Complete the Gifts and Skills Audit
- Ask Questions & Share Ideas—we want your input as we take these next steps together.
Thank you for your faithfulness and your partnership in building God’s kingdom here in Saginaw. We believe God has great plans for SUMC, and together we can step boldly into the future He has prepared for us.
Blessings and Peace,
Ramon F. Smith, Lead Pastor
Saginaw United Methodist Church We want to know!
Aligning everything with our mission and values, focusing on ministries for children, youth, and young families, strengthening discipleship, and expanding community outreach. We are asking our congregation to complete a Gifts and Skills Audit. The vision is at the intersection of our gifts and the needs of the church and community.
Please click here- Dear Saginaw UMC Family,
As we continue our visioning process, we invite you to take part in shaping the future of our church by completing the enclosed Congregational Facility Needs Survey. Your feedback is essential as we prayerfully consider how our physical space can better reflect and support our mission, ministries, and community outreach for generations to come.
At Saginaw UMC, our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The values of faithfulness, hospitality, community, growth, and service guide us.
This survey will help us understand how our current facility serves our needs and what opportunities may exist to improve or expand our space. Whether we remain in our current location or explore new possibilities, your voice will help us determine how to be faithful stewards of God’s vision.
Please take your time with both the multiple-choice and open-ended questions. We encourage honesty, creativity, and prayerful imagination. The survey is designed to reflect on both our current building and what a future facility might offer.
If you have any questions or need assistance completing the survey, feel free to contact the church office or a member of the Study Committee. Please return your completed survey by August 25, 2025.
Thank you for being an active and prayerful part of this process. Together, let us seek God’s direction as we take the next faithful step in ministry.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Ramon F. Smith
Lead Pastor, Saginaw United Methodist Church
